Heartless vandal desecrates Sydney police memorial

A heartless vandal has desecrated a memorial honouring police officers who have died in the line of duty.

Investigators have declared they won't rest until the man is caught and say while the wall is ruined, the officers' legacy will never be lost.

A man was seen scratching the Wall of Remembrance in the Royal Botanic Gardens on Friday just before 4pm.

The sacred site is to remember our fallen police officers and dozens of officers' names were desecrated by this act of vandalism.

Det Supt David Donoghue said: "This is a terrible crime that hits at the heart of all police officers."

News of the senseless vandalism has angered bereaved families.

Nathan Kohutek's father Mark was killed in a motorcycle crash while on duty in 1982.

The bereaved son told 7 News he was still proud of what his father did and proud his name was on the wall.

Police want to question a man who was seen on CCTV leaving the remembrance wall and skateboarding through the city.

Det Supt Donoghue added: "He was carrying and then seen on a skateboard and he walked with a distinctive stagger."

"The damaged plaques will need to be removed and re-sanded, costing over $10,000.

Police now want dedicated security cameras monitoring the area at all times.

Nathan want's to make one thing clear- his father's dignity will never be marred.

"You know he's tried to destroy a legacy by destroying a wall, it's not going to happen."
