Shark warning as hundreds of salmon thrash around water in feeding frenzy
Hundreds of salmon thrashed about in the water in a feeding frenzy prompting fisheries to issue a shark warning along the Perth coastline.
The bizarre frenzy occurred on Friday morning at the Swan River located in Bicton Baths, and forced the cancellation of a stand up paddle board class.
In the footage, the salmon flap about on the shoreline and some fish come so close to shore they become stuck on the sand.
Elemental Stand Up Paddle owner Caroline Bradley filmed the unique moment and uploaded the video to the company's Facebook page, which has been viewed more than 500,000 times.
Nathan Harrison from the Department of Fisheries (DOF) told 7 News has described the sight as spectacular.
“To see thousands of fish pushing in to the river and right up on the shore is quite spectacular,” Mr Harrison said.
The paddleboard company that captured the bizarre moment had to cancel the day’s activities and the DOF claims it was a smart move.
“Salmon schools are a source of food for sharks and as the salmon schools migrate along the WA coast often sharks will be accompanying them,” Mr Harrison said.
The Western Australia Fisheries Department also said there has been 25 sightings and three sharks detected over the past week.
The stark warning comes after a high number of shark attacks across the country that has kept surfers and swimmers on high alert.
