Gold Coast school bus driver admits to daily drug use, warns of habitual ice use among other drivers

A Gold Coast bus driver has made a shocking admission to 7 News, confessing that he has been high on drugs for two years while driving children to school.

Surfside Buslines has defended what it calls' very strict drug-testing procedures' but has launched its own investigation into the driver's claims.

The driver won't show his face because he says he's ashamed.

And this is why.

"I've been smoking marijuana for 25 years, every day, pretty heavily, and I used to drive kids to school," he told 7 News.

Payslips show he had been employed as a casual and part-time driver with Surfside since May, 2014.

He claims not once, was he tested for drugs.

"No urine tests, no drug tests, no nothing ever conducted," he said.

He claims that he was asked to resign a month ago but only when he was caught driving without a seatbelt.

A crime that put only his life, at risk.

"I now know what dangers them kids were in," he said.

And he fears, they still are.

"I know of a couple self-admitted drivers at Coomera depot....I've heard of ice getting around," he claims.

Surfside has defended what it calls its comprehensive drug testing policy.

In a statement to 7 News, the bus company says all drivers are checked before they are hired, they are breathalysed for alcohol before each shift, and the company carries out random drug tests.

It says staff testing positive will be subject to disciplinary action, including termination.

But the company declined to say how many drivers and staff have already been sacked.

The bus driver at the centre of the claims says he now wants the drug use among drivers to stop.

"I'm disgusted, that's why I'm putting it out there. I want it to stop," he said.

He says he's stopped taking drugs. He still drives, but not buses.
