Melbourne siege in 14th hour ends with arrest
The man at the centre of a siege in Melbourne who called Seven News threatening to set the house on fire has been arrested after barricading himself in his home for 14 hours.
Police moved in on the man, who warned he would to set the Maribyrnong property alight if authorities approached him.
During the stand-off, he started a fire inside the front room of the house, prompting emergency firefighter crews to jump into action.
The front windows of the house were smashed in the commotion but the blaze was quickly put under control.
It's believed the man was lured outside of his home with the promise of a cigarette, where police quickly detained him.
Paramedics were seen checking him over before putting him inside the police van.
Witnesses reported hearing loud “popping” sounds and smashing glass coming from the house during the night.
The siege began when police arrived at the home at about 3:30pm to talk to the man about reports of 'domestic issues'.
The suspect refused to come outside and then made the warning call to Seven News in Melbourne.
It is believed the man was the only occupant inside the house.
