Deputy principal grabbed by the throat by Year 12 student in western Sydney schoolyard

FIRST ON 7: A deputy principal was grabbed by the throat in a violent schoolyard scuffle at Granville Boys High School in Sydney.

Police were called to the scene after a boy, thought to be in Year 12, was filmed striding up to Noel Dixon, one of Granville's three deputy principals, and seizing him by the throat.

The incident was witnessed by dozens of students at the Mary Street school and captured on phone video obtained by 7 News.

The reason behind the scuffle is still unclear but the boy appears angry in the video and no-one could stop him.

The footage shows Mr Dixon reacting with extraordinary restraint. The music teacher breaks the hold and - almost calmly - fends the boy off.

Other teachers and students then stepped in to try and help remedy the situation.

In 2008 Granville boys ran amok at nearby Merrylands High in a brawl that left 18 people in hospital.

Three years later a student was stabbed six times in the stomach.

The Education Department issued a statement to 7 News that said the school "does not tolerate violence" and that it has taken strong disciplinary action against the student.

The statement did not reveal exactly what action had been taken but students and staff were also receiving support in the wake of the incident.

The matter has been reported to police and 7 News understands the student may face further action in the coming days.
