Little boy born with organs outside his body defies the odds and celebrates third birthday

A little boy has survived the odds, after being born with his vital organs on the outside of his body.

Toddler, Sam Gellie, was born with a rare condition where his liver, spleen and parts of his bowel were outside his body.

A thin membrane surrounds his organs, which makes it look like he has a ‘bump’.

Sam’s bump extends out from his belly button, and is kept in place with a compression bandage.

Little Sam has lived with his bump since he was born, while doctors try to work out a plan to save his fix his condition.

Doctors considered a miracle Sam survived birth, warning his parents they was a chance their child wouldn’t live to meet them.

“It’s a miracle and it’s amazing that he is here,” Mum Amy Gellie told 7 News.

“If we were listening to everything the medical people were thinking, we definitely wouldn’t have thought he would be here today”.

Medical professional Michael Nightingale said he had never seen a case like Sam’s before.

“I don’t think any of my colleagues have either,” he said.

Sam’s father said his son was a fighter who continued to defy the odds.

Later this year surgeons will start the long process to help Sam put his organs back into his body.

It’s expected he will need many operations over many years.

Doctors have said because Sam’s organs are on the outside of his body, his abdomen is very narrow and will need to be expanded.

Last weekend Sam celebrated his third birthday.

He refused to let his bump get in the way of him having fun.

The Royal Children’s Hospital is raising funds to help kids like Sam through their Good Friday appeal.
