Girl, 10, fought off two men in attempted abduction in Sydney's west

A 10-year-old girl escaped abduction on Thursday night by biting and kicking two men who tried to pull her into a white van in Sydney's west.

The young girl was walking east along Sutton Road, in Ashcroft, not far from Ashcroft Public School, when she saw a white van drive from a nearby laneway and stop alongside her at 5pm.

The male sitting in the passenger seat tried to start a conversation with the girl before the van continued driving and stopped near the footpath a second time.

The passenger and driver exited the van and grabbed the girl around the mouth and arm.

She bit and kicked her two attackers, causing them to release their grip and running away.

The girl headed to a nearby friend’s house before running home, at which point the van continued to follow her.

Once inside her home, the van remained parked outside for a short time before leaving the location.

Officers attached to Green Valley Local Area Command were alerted and launched an investigation into the incident.

The van has been described as having a black stripe running down the side, rusted wheel rims and only two windows on the vehicle, at the driver and front-passenger doors.

"She's 10 years old, walking home just after five o'clock yesterday afternoon on Sutton Road at Ashcroft, and she saw a white van drive up a laneway nearby her," Ms Blackstone said.

"The male passenger tried to start a conversation with her, and then the van sort of continued driving, stopping at the footpath a second time.

'''Police are encouraging parents to discuss the ‘Safe People, Safe Places’ messages with their children:

- Make sure your parents or another adult you know knows where you are at all times.

- Always walk straight home or to the place you are walking to. Walk near busier roads and streets, or use paths where there are lots of other people.

- Know where safe places are – a shop, service station, police station, library or school. If you are ever frightened, you should go to one of these places and ask them to call the police.

- Learn about safe adults you can look for and talk to if you need help – police officers, teachers at school, adults you know and trust.

- Don’t talk to people you don’t know and never get into a car with someone you don’t know. If a car stops on the side of the road and you don’t know the person inside, do not stop.

- If you are scared and can use a phone, call 000 and tell them you are scared.

- If someone tries to grab you, yell out, ‘Go away, I don’t know you’. This lets other people know you have been approached by someone you don’t know.'''
