French tourist shares details of alarming encounter with stranger following Salt Creek backpacker attacks

A French tourist has shared details of an alarming encounter with a stranger, following a violent sex attack on two backpackers at a South Australian beach.

23-year-old Luciel was looking for a ride to Melbourne last week when she said she was contacted by a man more than twice her age.

“I’m a girl, I’m travelling alone, what happens to me if I take the lift with that kind of guy?” she told 7 News.

Luciel said she rejected the stranger’s offer after he repeatedly demanded photographs of her.

“I just tell him like ‘oh my god you’re twice my age’ and no news anymore”.

She has warned other backpackers to be careful, as police try to unravel the life of the 59-year-old man who was arrested over last week’s terrifying attack at Salt Creek.

Police are trying to work out if he’s struck before.

Crime scene examiners returned to the Coorong National Park on Monday, focusing on a car park area.

Police have so far received 26 tip offs from the public through Crime Stoppers, but the man has not been charged with any other crimes.

Detectives have now spoken to both victims and the accused has been charged with a string of offences including unlawful sexual intercourse and attempted murder.

He will return to court in April.

Two women, aged in their 20s, were injured in the alleged attack with one suffering serious head trauma.

Task force detectives are inquiring into the "wider circumstances" surrounding the attack and are checking missing persons files across the country.

They are also going through the history of the alleged offender to determine if he can be linked to any other crimes.

Police said anyone with information about Tuesday's incident should still come forward.

All reports received so far were being investigated, they said.
