Aussie commuters to trial 'click and collect' groceries from train stations
Commuters in a hurry to get home will be able to pick up their groceries at the train station under a ‘click and collect’ scheme to be trialled in Sydney.
The Daily Telegraph reported Transport Minister Andrew Constance was set to announce an ‘Australian first’ grocery collection trial for city train customers.
The aim is to save Australians time after work.
The scheme will allow customers to buy groceries online and pick them up from specially designed lockers at train stations.
Sydney Trains is set to partner with Woolworths on a 12-month trial to deliver the scheme which will launch initially at Bondi Junction station.
If successful it could be rolled out across the network.
Woolworths won the right to the ‘click and collect’ project after a competitive tendering process.
Lockers have already been installed at Bondi Junction for the trial period.
Customers can order their shopping online from Woolworths via mobile before 11am and pick their groceries up from the train station.
Bondi Junction is one of the busiest train stations in Australia with close to 40,000 customers a day. It is also a busy bus interchange.
Mr Constance told the Daily Telegraph the government was in talks with Woolworths and Australia Post about also providing the service in Western Sydney.
Similar services have been rolled out overseas including on the London Underground.
The announcement comes ahead of the launch of a ‘Future Transport’ summit to be held at Surry Hills on April 18-19.
The summit will see experts from around the world come together to come up with improvements for our transport network.
HOW CLICK AND COLLECT WORKS:
• Customers order groceries online from Woolworths before 11am.
• They can then pick up their shopping from lockers at their train station (Bondi Junction only at this stage)
• The scheme will be tested for 12 months
