Manhunt underway after man shot dead in Geelong

UPDATE:

A gunman is on the run after a man was shot dead during an altercation in a Geelong street overnight.

Police are investigating whether this morning’s fatal shooting was a random or targeted attack.

A 36-year-old Norlane man was shot and killed by an occupant of a passing car, on Anakie Rd, in Bell Post Hill about 11pm last night.

He was shot in the stomach and collapsed onto the road. Paramedics tried to revive the man at the scene but he couldn’t be saved.

Witnesses told 7 News they believe an argument occurred with at least one woman before the man was shot.

The victim was seen walking on the road, waving his arms at passing cars before his death, the Geelong Advertiser reported.

It is understood a group of people were involved in an argument before spilling out onto Anakie Road.

Witnesses who heard the argument saw a dark-coloured sedan stop when an occupant fired the fatal shot.

It is believed police questioned neighbours following the incident, but no arrests have been made yet.

A resident, Margaret Day, rushed over to help the man, before paramedics arrived.

She said the man’s final words were: “I’m bleeding to death. I can’t breathe”.

One neighbour told The Advertiser loud arguments at the victim’s property were common, with cars often coming and going at all hours.

“I heard the shot but didn’t know if it was someone banging on their door,” one man said.

“There was an argument going on and the next thing I heard was bang and the sheila carrying on.

The area has been declared a crime scene and will remain so for most of today. Homicide detectives and forensics teams will remain at the scene this morning.
