Road rage aggressor smashes Sydney bus with shovel in peak hour traffic
A road rage confrontation in Sydney's peak hour traffic has quickly turned from verbal to violent after a bus driver was attacked with a shovel in Marrickville.
Amateur video has captured the moment the driver of a white Subaru station wagon pulled a shovel from the boot of his car and began smashing the front of the M30 bus at 9:30am on Monday.
Just moments after the bus had dropped off its final passenger, the confrontation started when the bus driver let another driver in front of him.
Within minutes, a shaken bus driver had a smashed windscreen.
The brief but frenzied attack unfolded in front of several witnesses who watched on from across the road.
"He was telling the bus driver to get out, the bus driver was like nah, nah, nah," witness Paul told 7 News.
"If he would have got out he would have got smashed by the shovel for sure."
The bus driver was unhurt in the incident and police say they have a pretty good idea who was behind an attack.
"Someone travelling behind him must have got upset that the traffic was a bit slow, came in front of him, stopped in front of the bus," Inspector Natasha Fairfax told reporters on Monday.
"This behaviour is particularly concerning given that it's on a public street.
"It's unnecessary for people to react in that way, the bus driver's just trying to do his job."
Despite more than $1000 damage, the bus was repaired and back on the road for the afternoon peak.
Police are also examining video taken from the buses own security cameras.
The man is described as being in his early 40s and of middle eastern or mediterranean appearance.
Police are urging himself to come forward and hand himself in.
