Teen takes it all in her stride a year after losing a leg in a boating accident

A teenage girl who lost her leg in a boating accident is looking forward to her school debutante ball after being fitted with a new prosthetic.

The significant milestone in Denique Peace's recovery comes a year since a devastating boating accident.

The aspiring dancer's leg was severed in a freak wake boarding accident on the Murray River, in December 2014.

The teen admitted she had felt down at times, but she was feeling positive now and really excited about her future.

Denique describes herself as a typical teenage girl. But while her friends are out enjoying their summer holidays, this brave 16-year-old is getting a new leg.

The year 11 student has had almost a dozen surgeries, spent weeks in hospital, and made countless trips to the physio.

Denique was fitted with her first prosthetic leg last year, but the new product is more technologically-advanced and will help her walk unaided. Technicians have been fine-tuning it for days, ahead of her fitting.

Her new leg is a ‘containment socket’ allowing more of a boney mechanical lock, to give Denique more control and improved comfort when walking.

The teen is hoping to dance unaided at her school debutante ball this year.
