Homicide investigation lauched after body discovered at Auckland house

That is what west Auckland residents say they have been told following the death of elderly woman in Te Atatu Peninsula.

The 70-year-old's body was discovered by members of her family at the Glenvil Lane, Te Atatu, property on Friday afternoon.

Police initially classed the woman's death as unexplained, but later launched a homicide investigation.

Armed police, police officers with dogs and a helicopter were sent to the neighbourhood.

A neighbour of the dead woman has told the NZ Herald police told her the woman's death came after a "burglary gone wrong" at the house.

One of the residents living on the street, Steven Columbus said he was surprised to hear the news.

"It's just a quiet street...it's just shocking," he said. "I won't sleep for a few nights."

Police are due to provide an update about the investigation this afternoon.
