'We speak English in this country': Victim of racist rant tracks woman who defended her

A young Sydney woman who became the target of a horrible racist tirade on a train has managed to track down the kind woman who defended her, to say thanks.

Natalie Soto, 20, was catching up with her mum via phone while on the train to work when a woman started unleashing verbal abuse across the carriage because she wasn’t speaking English.

Ms Soto, who learned to speak fluent English at a young age, also speaks Spanish and Italian at home with her family.

The psychology student said her mum usually calls her on her way to work to make sure she was OK.

“I was just telling her everything was fine when it all happened,” she said.

“I could hear a woman was upset about something and I wasn’t sure what at first… she turned around and said ‘get this wog off the train”.

“I told my mum I had to go and it just escalated from there”.

“She told me that we were in Australia and we don’t speak like that here and to speak it when I get home”

"If you can't speak it in public don't speak it at all," the sandy-haired woman was heard saying in the video footage.

Ms Soto said the woman, who was in her 50s, wasn’t drunk and had her two children with her.

“They didn’t encourage her, they looked embarrassed and eventually walked away,” she said.

“I feel like maybe she had been exposed to the wrong things or she used me as a gateway to express her anger,” she said.

“She told me you’re probably worse than the ‘towel heads’ we see”.

While Ms Soto was shocked and extremely upset by the incident, she was grateful a number of people came forward to stand up for her.

In the footage another young woman, who we later learnt is 19-year-old Nikki Strong, can be seen coming to Ms Soto’s defense.

"We are a multicultural country, look at the carriage!" Miss Strong said.

"Unless you're Aboriginal, you have come from another country to be here.

"So her speaking another language is not OK - but you saying the C-word in front of children, that's OK?"

Ms Soto contacted Yahoo7 to see if there was a way to find her helper.

“If she wanted to meet up with me I’d thank her, if someone is that courageous I’d like to be her friend,” she said earlier today.

Fortunately Miss Strong heard her public call out and contacted Yahoo7 on Friday afternoon to come forward.

Coincidentally the teen was also studying psychology at university and had quite a bit in common with the stranger she helped on the train.

"We should be promoting other cultures, not putting them down," she said.

"I couldn't believe someone could think like that".

Unfortunately Ms Soto said it wasn’t the first time she had experienced racism in Australia, however she did not believe it was a racist country.

“It’s not the first time, I’m a native speaker and I went to primary school without knowing a word of English… I suffered instances of bullying from my teachers and other kids but I made every effort to fix it and started learning English… by year six I was entering spelling bees,” she said.

Ms Soto posted video of the incident to Facebook and encouraged others to share her post to help locate the ranter.

"Today was particularly sucky because I got f***ed on for talking to my mama in my own language by a lady on the train," the post read.

"I didn't record all of it, and I didn't really have much to say. I don't usually get hit up with this level of racism.

"I'd like anyone that deems this behaviour appropriate to delete me for your sake. I have zero patience for prejudicial, small-minded, backwards thinking people."

Despite the ordeal Ms Soto said she was still proud to call Australia home and was fortunate to see the support her video had gained.

“The support overwhelms the amount of negative responses I’ve gotten,” she said.

She was currently considering whether she would take the matter to the police.
