Mark Zuckerberg celebrates birth of daughter with plans to donate $45 billion fortune
To celebrate the birth of their daughter, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan have announced plans to donate 99 per cent of their shares in the social media company to improve the world.
Mr Zuckerberg took to the site to proudly announce the birth of his daughter Max and said the couple would aim to improve the world she was about to grow up in.
"We are committed to doing our small part to help create this world for all children," Mr Zuckerberg wrote.
"We will give 99 percent of our Facebook shares - currently about $45 billion - during our lives to join many others in improving this world for the next generation.
"Thank you to everyone in this community for all your love and support during the pregnancy. You've given us hope that together we can build this world for Max and all children."
In a letter to his baby girl, Mr Zuckerberg said his plan was to ‘advance human potential’ and ‘promote equality for all children in the next generation’.
The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative included plans to donate all but one per cent of their shares fortune.
"Our initial areas of focus will be personalized learning, curing disease, connecting people and building strong communities," the letter reads.
"We know this is a small contribution compared to all the resources and talents of those already working on these issues.
"But we want to do what we can, working alongside many others."
Mr Zuckerberg and Mrs Chan have been together since 2003 after meeting at Harvard.
The couple married in May 2012.
