Construction worker's remarkable escape from death

A US construction worker has only just escaped death after more than a thousand tonnes of bricks fell on top of him when a demolition job went horribly wrong.

Construction worker Tim Phifer was bought in to help bring down the 46m tall chimney stack in Pell City, Alabama following two failed attempts to knock it down with explosives.

Mr Phifer was in the excavator attempting to bring down the stack when it suddenly started to collapse.

The structure collapsed directly on top of Mr Phifer’s vehicle, trapping him inside.
The whole thing was caught on cameras, including a drone filming from above.

The worker’s team immediately rushed towards the excavator, which was buried under chiney debris.

Moments later Mr Phifer remarkably emerged from the rubble.

“I’ve had some stuff go wrong, but not like this,” Mr Phifer told ABC news.

He said he only survived because he fought his instincts to run from the vehicle.
