One-eyed man interrogated by police at Sydney airport

A one-eyed man who is known to have spent time in Syria was interrogated at Sydney Airport by police after he stepped off a flight.

Osman Haouchar, 26, says he has been working in refugee camps along the border areas.

The former Parramatta High student was on a flight that had arrived from Abu Dhabi on Monday night.

Four car loads of Federal Police were at the airport waiting and the officers spent four hours speaking to Mr Haouchar.

Much of that region that Mr Haouchar says he has spent time in is a declared no-go zone and it is a criminal offence to enter some areas, carrying a 10 year prison sentence.

The news comes as federal intelligence sources tell 7 News the headcount on Australians fighting in Syria currently sits at 110 with 40 killed in battle and up to 30 having returned home.

Now three key events are coming up that will likely attract a greater amount of security.

They are the first anniversary of the Lindt cafe siege, the tenth anniversary of the Cronulla riots, and New Years Eve.

Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said his officers are doing everything to keep one step ahead of any terrorist activity saying the police have moved from being first responders to first preventers.
