Girl, 8, dies while driving car through Kansas with her grandfather as passenger

An eight-year-old girl from Kansas was killed when she lost control of the car she was driving while her grandfather was in the passenger seat.

Cadence Orcutt was driving a Chevrolet Cobalt sedan on Sunday afternoon when she lost control and over corrected to the left, the Kansas Highway Patrol confirmed.

The car left the rural road and careened down an embankment before flipping and landing on its roof in a creek in a sparsely populated farming area.

Cadence was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene, cjonline.com reports.

High patrol said they did not believe the creek water played a role in the girl's death.

The passenger, 56-year-old Dennis Eugene Meers, was injured in the crash and it is not known if he was wearing a seatbelt.

The crash site was under investigation Monday and Doniphan County officials would consider possible charges once a final report is completed.

Cadence’s mother, Brittany Nicole Orcutt, took to Facebook to defend herself against allegations of bad parenting.

“For all the judgmental people saying bad things about me and my parenting skills, there’s one thing you all should know — I am so over protective of my children,” the post read. “I would have absolutely never let my daughter drive on one gravel road.

“I wasn’t with her and if I had been, this wouldn’t have happened. I don’t need anyone’s judgment. I’m blaming myself enough as it is. My heart is dying. There are no words. There’s nothing. She will never come home again.

“I just hope that every parent holds their babies extra tight and realize how lucky you are that they are in your arms. A piece of my heart died tonight and it’s never coming back.”
