Violent pool cue attacker jailed as victim revealed to have PTSD
An intoxicated man who turned a seemingly calm Sunday afternoon pool game in Bondi into a violent brawl has been jailed after what a judge described to be a 'horrifying' attack.
In the video, Karl Tammistu can be seen grabbing a pool cue before slamming it onto Steven Green's head multiple times.
"He struck Mr Green, as I've said twice, so hard that during one of the strikes the cue broke or at least had pieces splintering off it,” Justice Greg Hosking said.
Today, Tammistu's supporters packed the court as he was sentenced to a minimum three years jail.
But friends say he was provoked after an inappropriate comment was made about his girlfriend.
"I know Karl is very sorry about what happened" Tammistu's friend told 7News.
The reaction caused Steven Green to suffer a gash to his head, a torn eyelid and a broken finger.
"That such a person can be subject to a random savage attack like this is nothing short of horrifying,” Justice Hosking said.
Karl Tammistu only turned himself into police after hearing his victim was taken St Vincent's hospital, the court heard.
Mr Green spent the next four days being treated and now suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, along with ongoing problems with his left eye.
Tammitsu will be eligible for parole in May 2018 and will then be deported back to Estonia.
