A picture that appears to show a dead brown and black snake speared through each other has baffled animal experts.

The bizarre picture taken in Griffith, New South Wales appears to show a black snake, which has pierced the body of a brown snake, with its body protruding out the mouth of the latter.

Experts have been unable to deduce how the snakes would have come to the unusual position, which Geoff Mitchell took a picture of.

“I had to research it and it seems quite common for brown snakes to eat black snakes, but I have seen none where one snake has punched a hole through another,” Mr Mitchell told 3AW.

An Australia Zoo spokesperson reportedly added: “We can't imagine a black snake climbing into another snake but this entire situation is very strange. We would still suggest that the brown one was eating the black, but we will never know for sure.”
