'Dollarydoos' petition close to 40,000 signatures

Simpsons fans have been given free licence to quote lines from the show in the wake of a popular online petition to rename Australian dollars to ‘Dollarydoos’.

The term is a reference to a sixth season episode ‘Bart vs. Australia’ and one quickly gaining currency with 38,594 supporters signed-up to the petition at the time of print. It's a significant jump from reports two days ago that cited up to 7000 signatures.

The creator of the change.org petition, Thomas Probst, is aiming for, according to the site, 50,000 supporters and international attention from renowned publications like Time will certainly help.

The impetus of the campaign, which has also gained traction from ardent Simpsons fans on social media, is to help the Australian economy.

“Due to global commodity prices plummeting, the Australian economy is struggling. That's why we need something to stimulate the Australian economy and that something is changing the name of the Australian currency to 'Dollarydoos',” Mr Probst writes.

“This will make millions of people around the world want to get their hands on some Australian currency due to the real life Simpsons reference, driving up the value of the Australian currency.

“If the leaders of this great nation have any common sense at all, they will introduce legislation to parliament to change the name of our currency as soon as possible. So please sign this petition to get our nations leaders to finally act on this important issue.”

In the episode, the Simpsons family ultimately finds themselves at odds with Australian customs.

It's unclear whether Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is a Simpsons fan, or whether he and the Australian Government would support the notion.
