Tony Abbott gets pranked on first day back in Parliament

It's been a tough few weeks for the former Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

His first day back in Parliament as a backbencher was always going to be remembered, but perhaps not for what actually happened.

Mr Abbott fell victim to a tongue in cheek prank from a cheeky colleague on his first day back in Parliament.

The tense occasion was interrupted when Coalition colleague Darren Chester, the Nationals member for Gippsland, gave his old boss with a membership application for the Nationals.

The gesture brought laughs to Mr Abbott and surrounding colleagues who were sitting in the gallery.

Mr Abbott is also reportedly upset with his former mentor John Howard because he did not support him following the leadership challenge.

The two men reportedly met up two Fridays ago and shared a tense meal, reports the Australian Financial Review.

Mr Abbott reportedly ‘gave his elder and mentor both barrels for his public performance the day after the ballot’.

Shortly after the spill on September 14 Mr Howard told the media that he was willing to help the new Prime Minister and that he has spoken to both men.
Mr Howard said at the time that the media could not be blamed for Mr Abbotts’s demise, something he made clear that he did not agree with in his farewell speech.
