Two charged after Brisbane Uber driver allegedly bashed by 'taxi gang'

The war between the Australian Taxi industry and Uber has reached a new, violent low.

7 News has discovered two men employed by Black-and-White Cabs have been arrested after they allegedly assaulted three Uber drivers and attacked their cars.

The alleged assault happened early on Monday morning. The drivers claimed they were targeted because they worked for Uber.

The first was 30-year-old man who was waiting to pick up a passenger in Fortitude Valley.

His car was damaged and he was assaulted.

“They started throwing punches… punches everywhere,” he said.

He said the attackers told him he was ‘ruining their business’.

The victim said he saw the group get into a maxi taxi after he was attacked.

“They were friendly with all the other taxi drivers,” he said.

“Basically they were laughing at the whole incident… that's the most disturbing thing. They were enjoying it.”

Five men were allegedly involve in the attacks.

Queensland police said the two who had been arrested, aged 26 and 29, were the alleged ‘ringleaders’.

In a statement, Uber said they would assist police with the investigation into the crimes.

“There is no place for violence in a civilised society,” the statement read.

A spokesman from Black and White Cabs said: “This appears to be the actions of rogue individual taxi drivers.

“Any driver who is criminally charged will be disaffiliated and stopped from driving a Black & White Cab”.

The Uber driver said despite the violent attack he would continue driving for the ride share company.

"Brisbane is a really peaceful city and it's a shame it's happened”.

The taxi drivers will face court on Friday.
