Every now and then there’s a story that makes the rest of us believe in true love.

The story of Sydney couple, George and Maude Trewin, will do just that.

70 years ago, on October 7 1945, the pair met at Neilsen Park.

George was a young sailor in the Australian Navy and he had walked down to Shark Beach with a few mates from the HMAS Paterson, which was docked at Watsons Bay.

That’s when he saw her.

“I was strolling down the beach with my friend Bobby when a beautiful girl winked at me from afar,” he told ABC News.

Once he built up the confidence to talk to the beautiful girl with the cheeky wink, he learnt her name was Maude and invited her to tea.

“I invited her back to my ship for afternoon tea, where we shared stale Sao biscuits and a pot of tea,” he said.

“We spent the afternoon getting to know one another and before she left I asked her if she would like to see a movie at the local cinema the following week.”

Fortunately Maude said yes and the rest was history.

The couple’s relationship has since stood the test of time.

They were married in 1946 and have since raised seven children, 17 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

Congratulations on 70 years together George and Maude! And thanks for giving the rest of us a bit of hope when it comes to true love.
