Nauru rape victims pleads with Federal Government for abortion aid

A rape victim on Nauru has pleaded with Federal Government for safe passage to Australia where she can legally have an abortion.

Lawyers representing the 23-year-old, who is about 11 weeks pregnant after being raped on the island, have written to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Immigration Minister Peter Dutton demanding a response deadline that has since lapsed.

The Somali refugee is one of two reported rape victims, including a 26-year-old, to request help after being sexually assaulted on the island where abortion is illegal.

A spokesman for Mr Dutton has said the Immigration Department is aware of sexual assault allegations but would not discuss individual cases due to privacy.

"All pregnant women receive professional and coordinated health care," the spokesman said.

"The Department of Immigration and Border Protection is aware of an allegation of sexual assault. Various supports are provided to alleged victims through the government of Nauru Sexual Assault Unit and service providers. Alleged victims are also supported to provide a report to the Nauruan Police Force."

The Nauru government yesterday issued a defensive statement in response to the claims.

"The government of Nauru says refugees in the country are in no physical danger and stories of locals attacking them are largely fabricated to further political agendas and influence the Australian government,” it read.
