Peter Dutton resigns via text message: report

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton has offered to resign via text message, according to reports.

The news comes after a horrific few weeks for the government frontbencher, who was caught in two embarrassing gaffes in the lead up to Malcolm Turnbull's successful challenge for the Liberal Party leadership.

Mr Dutton is reported to have offered to step down from his job via a text message to the Prime Minister over night, however, there is no indication as yet if Mr Turnbull has accepted the offer.

At a press conference this morning, Mr Turnbull told reporters he would be making announcements on the make up of his cabinet would become clear when new ministers are sworn in on Monday.

Mr Dutton has refused to deny the reports he offered to quit.

Asked this morning if the reports were accurate, Treasurer Joe Hockey told the media: "I don't comment on things I discuss with the Prime Minister."

Mr Dutton was a strong supporter of former Prime Minister Tony Abbott in the lead up to his ousting but had also become a lightning rod for criticism.

The minister made headlines who weeks ago when he lamented that Fairfax Media and the ABC had been waging a 'jihad' against the government.

He was soon back in the spotlight when a live microphone caught two poor taste jokes at the expense of Aboriginal people and Pacific island nations.

The change of prime minister is widely expected to trigger a major cabinet reshuffle, which was likely to see the embattled Immigration Minister lose his job.

Defense Minister Kevin Andrews has also been tipped to lose his portfolio to South Australia MP and Education Minister Christopher Pyne.

Treasurer Joe Hockey has also been tipped to lose his position in the government's second most important portfolio to rising star and Social Services Minister Scott Morrison.
