Disabled girl and mum slammed as ‘lazy’ after parking car in handicapped space

A Colorado mother and her 10-year-old daughter have spoken of their disbelief after they found a note on their van which called them 'lazy' and 'idiotic' for parking in a disability spot.

The typed-out note was placed on the van windshield and the family initially thought it might have been an advert.

Naomi Barringer and her daughter Kaitlyn had popped to their local Target store in Westminster last Friday afternoon when the shocking incident occurred.

Ms Barringer told KUSA-TV: "I thought it was a flyer."

The note reads: "Greetings. I observed you parking in this handicapped parking place today.

"It appears you’re are not really handicapped. Perhaps just in a hurry or worse, just plain lazy.’ ”

Kaitlyn told the TV station that she may not look disabled and that she is not lazy but is in pain often and needs the disability placard.

The 10-year-old suffers from a rare genetic disorder called hypophosphatasia that leaves her bones weak and brittle.

She was born with with from 13 bone fractures and has had dozens throughout her life.

Kaitlyn's mum describes the condition on the Go Fund Me page as 'chronic, potentially life-threatening metabolic disease characterised by defective bone mineralization that leads to destruction and deformity of bones'.

"I was offended, I was hurt actually. I really didn't know people thought of me like that.

"I am disabled and they may not know that and I can understand that because I do look normal but I don't think they have to do that," Kaitlyn said.

Kaitlyn said the note made her feel sad and said just because she didn't look disabled it doesn't mean that she isn't in pain.

The Go Fund Me page called Sweet Kaitlyn's Journey has been set up to try and raise $14,500.
