A man has been forced to abandon ship after his houseboat went up in flames on the Gold Coast.

The 50 year old was lucky to escape with minor burns to his hands after he jumped from the vessel, which was floating in Marine Parade in Labrador.

The seven metre long boat was moored about 200m off shore before the fire took hold on Thursday afternoon.

Water police and firefighters rushed to the scene to put out the flames.

An ambulance spokeswoman told local media the man was taken to hospital in a stable condition.
