More than 225,000 Apple accounts stolen in cyber attack

If you thought jail-breaking your iPhone was an awesome idea, you may be having second thoughts.

Researchers for Weiptech and Palo Alto Networks have revealed more than 225,000 Apple accounts have been stolen from jailbroken devices in a widespread malware attack.

The account details were stolen via malware distributed through Cydia, a popular jailbreaking tool.

If you don’t know what jailbreaking is, there’s not much reason to be alarmed as it probably won’t affect you.

Jailbreaking is the practice of bypassing software restrictions on a device, which exists for security reasons or to purposely limit the software.

For example, Apple only allows you to install apps on to its devices from their official App store.

If an Apple device is jailbroken, you can run a range of different applications that have not been officially approved by Apple.
