Police investigating 'out of control' junior rugby league brawl

Penrith police are still trying to speak with dozens of people either involved in or who witnessed a junior rugby league brawl on Sunday.

The under-17 grand final between the Riverstone Razorbacks and Cambridge Park at Windsor ended with security guards trying to keep the peace.

While the game was won by Cambridge Park 20-14, no one could be awarded for behaviour.

One father told Seven News Sydney his ribs were cracked as a result of the brawl at the club and his 16-year-old son was punched and thrown into a fence.

The man was yet to give his statement to police.

The club has said it will wait for the outcome of the police investigation before they issue any bans.

Police have been given pictures of players and spectators throwing punches while officials tried to separate them.

A police spokesman said some could be charged for their behaviour.

“Yes, there's a possibility, depending on the evidence that's provided, that people could be charged as a result of it, yes,” the spokesman said.

The game’s administrators seemed powerless to stop tempers boiling over, both off and on the field.

It’s not the first time junior rugby games have reached boiling points this season.

Last month Sharks players Andrew and David Fafita copped six-match suspensions for abusing a referee at a junior match at Glenwood.

But officials would like to see the aggression come to an end.

The Penrith League has gone as far as hiring security to patrol junior games and clubs have been threatened with disqualification unless they keep their players, parents, officials and coaches under control.
