Callous charity theft from Cat Protection Society

Surveillance camera footage shows the moment a man stole a donation box from the front office of the Cat Protection Society in Newtown, Sydney.

The Cat Protection Society NSW Inc. was quick to post the footage on their Facebook page and received an overwhelming response.

“As you can see from our surveillance camera footage, a man took our donation box from our front office on Saturday.”

Facebook users were outraged that it appeared someone had brazenly stolen from the charity.

“That's so disappointing. The kitties need that money. We will just have to donate some extra to make up for it,” Delanne Webb wrote.

Other commenters pointed out that it appeared to be parents with kids who had committed the crime.

Unfortunately it seems other people’s generosity is what made the box a target. The society told their followers that they believe a fifty dollar note someone had put in there had alerted the alleged criminal to the money.

They warned people to keep on the look out for anyone trying to get donations with the box.

“Please be aware that we never, ever solicit donations on the street so if you see someone purporting to collect donations on behalf of Cat Protection, please call the Police. Only businesses authorised by us can have a donation box in place.”

If you see the donation box contact Newtown police directly on 02 9550 8199.
