Two illegally imported 'mega-pythons' rescued in America

Two gigantic pythons have been rescued and sent to live in a sanctuary in America.

The snakes, native to Southeast Asia were rescued by a Vermont man and surrendered to wildlife wardens.

Warden Chat Barrett told Fox News the snakes were probably the biggest ever seen in Vermont.

The larger of the two pythons was about 5.4m long and weighed almost 120kg.

US snake collector Pat Howard told reporters he got the snakes on Sunday from a New York man who was unable to keep them.

Mr Howard didn’t have the permits to keep them either so he called for help to rehome them.

"If a snake that size got ahold of you, if you didn't have any help with you, you're a goner," he said.

“They certainly had to go to a professional facility, bigger than mine.

“I’m a one-man operation and these snakes, to even be around them safely, you need at least couple of people. They were rather docile snakes, they’re certainly not snakes that you want out in the public,” Mr Howard told Vermont reporters.

He called the Vermont Department of Fish & Wildlife, and asked to hand the snakes over to experts.

"I'm just glad to see she's going to where she'll be well cared for," Howard said of the larger of the two.

The snakes are now living at a reptile sanctuary in Massachusetts.

Herpetologist Mack Ralbovsky said the snakes would be taken care of, and will have a good home.

Fortunately Mr Howard will not face any charges for his brief possession of the illegal pythons, because his motivation was to rescue them.
