ATM employee's mistake leads to theft of $150,000

An ATM employee has had the worst day at work ever, after their mistake led to $150,000 being stolen.

In a video released by New Jersey police, the worker was filmed taking a bag from a building and placing it on the sidewalk next to his car.

That bag contained $150,000 USD.

He then takes another bag from the sedan and places it in the boot of the car before getting into the back seat.

The car then drives away with the first bag left behind on the footpath.

Before the employee realises the mistake, a while van can be seen pulling up next to the bag.

The offender is wearing a t-shirt and white shorts and gets out of the van to pick up the bag without looking inside.

He then gets back into the van.

Police said it took the employee about 15 minutes to realise they were missing the bag.

WCBS-TV News reported he was so distraught when he made the call to police that an ambulance had to take him to hospital.

Local police have said theft involving such a large amount of money would be considered a ‘second degree crime’.

Those involved could faced ten years in jail if they do not return the money.

“It seems they just stumbled onto the bag of money,” Officer William Hunt told US media.

“You can return the bag and maybe look like a hero or make us find you and we’ll make you pay for it.”

Officer Hunt said the ATM workers were headed to replenish the money-dispensing machines in New York.

Police chief James Batelli said he believed it was a crime of opportunity.

“I’m sure the people who opened up the bag were surprised,” he said.
