Teen leads police on wild chase into a river

A 16-year-old has been arrested in the US after leading police on a wild car chase, which ended with him swimming for his freedom after crashing into a river.

The Macomb County Sheriff’s office released video of the chase, which shows the Chevy Impala the teenager was driving crash into letter boxes and through ditches, before it was finally driven down an embankment into the Clinton River.

The chase began at 5.23am on June 25 and lasted just over five minutes before the speeding driver’s car was rendered useless.

The video shows the young driver struggling to keep the vehicle under control after bursting its tyres, and narrowly avoiding pedestrians.

According to a statement from the sheriff’s office, the young man refused to go quietly; swimming to the other side of the river after his car could no longer be driven.

Deputies found him hiding on the opposite bank and used a taser to bring him into custody.

The boy will be charged with larceny in a building, possession of marijuana, felonious assault, unlawfully driving away an automobile, fleeing and eluding, and resisting and obstructing arrest.
