Shopping Wars

Having suffered for years with a reputation for higher prices the IGA grocery chain is fighting back.

It's 800 stores nationally have been ordered to price match Coles and Woolies - which means deep discounts on much of its range.

The real battle between the supermarkets has just begun. Coles and Woolworths - and Aldi are facing a new competitor.

IGA's might be smaller but it's promising big price cuts across a huge range of products to match the big supermarkets.

It's a move that's predicted to shake up the industry and cause headaches for Coles and Woolworths.

Response received from Aldi:

ALDI Australia is committed to delivering exceptional value to our customers every day, and part of this
commitment is offering the lowest possible prices on our range of high quality products.

Consumer advocacy group CHOICE’s 2015 Supermarket Price Survey revealed that by buying ALDI exclusive brands instead of leading brands, customers can save approximately 50% off their weekly grocery bill*.

As the price leader in the market, ALDI welcomes competitive pricing and believes that greater competition in
the grocery sector as a whole is in the best interest of Australian consumers. However, as a business, we do not support the introduction of pricing levels that are unsustainable in the long term and may put pressure on the supply chain.

:

Over the past six years we have reduced the prices on thousands of products, which has made a real difference to the cost of living for Australian households. We are now committed to further lowering the cost of groceries for Australian families.

Specifically we have recorded cumulative food and liquor deflation of around 8 per cent between 2008 and 2014 compared to the Australian Bureau of Statistics measure of inflation which rose by almost 15 per cent over the same six year period.
