A cute, big-eyed, unclassified species of octopus is winning fans throughout the world.

The animal has been called 'adorable' by so many people that scientists may just call it that.

Stephanie Bush, a postdoctoral researcher at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, said that she is considering the name Opisthotheusis Adorabilis.

The species is currently unofficially known as a flapjack octopus.

Ms Bush told Science Friday that the unnamed creature lives in the deep sea at depths of up to 450m. The endearing species is 18cm in diameter and spreads like a 'parachute' as it moves.

The ocean is a vast and mysterious place full of weird and wonderful creatures.
