Steep ask: Can travelers handle the Dreamliner?

Fasten your seatbelts, hold on to your armrests and make sure you have your sickbag handy, because this is what flying could look like in the near future.

The Paris Airshow is coming up but aeroplane maker Boeing can’t wait that long to show off its new 787-9 Dreamliner’s ability to perform a near vertical lift off.

The company has released this video showcasing the new plane’s abilities over a lake in Washington, US, including the hair-raising climb into the sky.

The video, released on Boeing’s YouTube page, is effectively a dress rehearsal for the air show later this week.

The Dreamliner 787-9 boasts a carbon fibre body. Usually, planes of this type and size are made from aluminium.

According to reports it is also six metres longer than its predecessor, boosting the all important passenger capacity.

Boeing says it already has 30 customers lined up for the new aircraft, at least one of which will be flying out of Australia. United Airlines plans to use the plane for its Melbourne to Los Angeles route.

And in reassuring news for travelers, the incredibly steep ascent shown on the video is not likely to be something they will ever experience.

Flyers can expect a steep lift off, but not one as extreme as that shown in Boeing’s promotion.
