The father of a Texas homecoming queen who died in a flood on her way home from prom has revealed she called him for advice moments before she drowned.

Alyssa Ramirez, 18, drowned when her car was swept away in a flash flood at the weekend.

Her father, Tomas, told NBC News she phoned her father at 2:45am on her way home from the prom.

“She wakes me up and I say, 'Honey, what's going on?" Mr Ramirez said.

"She says, 'Dad, what do I do? My car has been in the water. What do I do? What do I do?"

He said said he told Alyssa to back the car up but she said: "I can't, Dad. The car's tipping."

"I said I'm on my way, and that's the last I got to speak to her," Ramirez said. "I never got to talk to her again."

Alyssa reportedly called 911 as well.

But the tragedy happened too quickly, and neither her father or emergency services could reach in time.

Mr Ramirez emergency responders told him his daughter died smiling, which has been a comforting thought for him.

"You would think that when they find a child like that she would have a look of terror on her face, but she did not,” he said.

Her death is one of 35 confirmed fatalities in Texas, which has been hit by a spate of flooding in recent days. Ten people are currently missing in affected areas and heavy rain is hampering search and rescue efforts.
