A train which derailed on a bridge in India was left dangling over a river and almost killed hundreds of passengers.

Storms in Kokrajhar threw a tree onto the rail tracks just before the bridge on Saturday, Ruptly reports.

Video footage shows the train suspended precariously just above the Champamati river after it was derailed.

Miraculously passengers and staff managed to escape from the train despite its perilous position.

The driver, and several crew and passengers sustained some injuries but none were critical.

Five coaches and the engine of the 55753 UP Sifung train were damaged.

It is thought the train was travelling slowly at the time but a full investigation into the incident is underway.
