Undercover lotto agent's cover blown after $75K mistake

CCTV of the lotto agent entering the Palmdale gas station with the fake ticket.

A seemingly underpaid lotto winner, who was given $75 instead of $75,000, has been revealed to be a lottery compliance officer.

The apparent mistake by the Californian servo cashier went viral after an appeal was made to find the 'winner'.

Station manager Shamsun Nahar Islam said the staff member realised they had made the error then phoned the California State Lottery.

"I hope the right person comes and picks up the ticket," Mr Islam told the media on Sunday.

Local media is reporting that an investigation is underway to see whether the erroneous payment really was an honest mistake.

“Since the store held onto the ticket it appears the ticket was mishandled,” Lottery spokesman Russell Lopez said in a statement to KTLA.

Mr Lopez defended the required compliance checks, saying they protect business, customers, and retailers.

He said 98 percent of retailers “act with integrity and honesty.”
