Family begs thieves to return baby boy's ashes

A distraught family has begged the thief who stole the ashes of their baby son to return their treasured keepsakes.

Natasha Cheung turned to Facebook for help and prayers after discovering thieves had taken a small silver box containing the ashes of their son Alex during a robbery on her father’s home in Western Australia.

Alex was stillborn at five-and-a-half months and Natasha kept his remains in the box inside a small white pouch next to her bed.

“They’ve taken everything including the ashes of my little boy Alex,” Natalie wrote.

“It’s a small silver box inside a white pouch with a rainbow coloured butterfly on it.

“The box has his ashes but also his umbilical clip in it.”

The devastated mother told Fairfax the theft had brought back the pain of losing their son and left the family to grieve a second time.

“It's like you have lost him a second time,” she said.

"I've always kept him close.

"He's always been part of our family."

Police said the home in Hayden Close, Noranda, Western Australia, was broken into between 7.30am and 5.45pm on Monday, May 4.

Offenders went through the home, rummaging through drawers and cupboards.

A police spokeswoman said among the various items stolen were Alex's ashes in a silver/white hand-size box with a rainbow butterfly image on it, wrapped in a white drawstring bag.

"The drawstring bag looks similar to a jewellery bag and this may be why it was taken," the spokeswoman said.

Anyone in the area of Hayden Close yesterday who saw any suspicious activity, or anyone with any information relating to this crime is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
