Footballer dies during country football match

A young footballer has tragically died during a match in country Victoria.

Paramedics rushed to Gellibrand Recreation Reserve, in Gellibrand, after reports of a 24-year-old man falling to the ground after a tackle in the game against Lorne.

A spokesman for AFL Barwon said counselling would be provided to all those affected, reports News Corp.

He added: "A player copped a tackle across the chest, everything was fair and above board but his heart stopped,” the spokesperson said.

“It’s an unfortunate and sad accident that has occurred.

“AFL Victoria will put in place some counselling through their pastoral care arm and try to help all the affected parties.”

A Victoria Police spokeswoman confirmed they were called to the scene in Football Road at 3.30pm in Saturday.
