A new campaign is offering ways to save you as much as 60 per cent on your bills while still staying warm this winter.

Energy bills cost the average family around $2000 a year, almost s week.

Most household energy bills will double or even triple this winter which means electricity and gas costs over the next two quarters.

They are now a real factor for every family budget.

John Dee, author of EnergyCut, told 7 News: "Most households and business I have visited could easily reduce their energy bills by 20 to 30 per cent.

"In some cases can reduce it by as much as 60 per cent."

Troy Edwards said: "Look at these bills they are $1200 plus. We need to try and get these bills down."

John Dee's written a free power-saving guide called EnergyCut and he's showing father of six, Troy Edwards, how to shave 50 per cent off his $4000 plus annual spend.

The first rule is to study your bills and monitor usage.

If you're not in an energy contract, just by calling around the energy companies you can get up to 10-15 per cent off your energy bills, just try it.

Troy saved $600 on a new contract.

He also installed an Efergy Energy monitoring device for you and Troy was able to measures all the power in his home.

One of the simplest things to do to save money this winter on heating costs is to control your thermostat.

Set it to 18-20 degrees because every degree you go above 20, that is an increase of 10 per cent to your heating costs.

Halogen downlights heat up to 370 degrees and are very expensive to run and are a fire hazard.

Replace them with LEDs that last up to 25 times longer and use 80% less energy.

These simple changes helped Troy save a total of $1,735.
