A man has told a court he would have never married his wife if he had known she had deformed nipples citing it was the reason his marriage was 'doomed' during his divorce proceedings.

The excuse was given last year in an attempt by the man who was fighting to reduce the amount of money owed to his wife according to Fairfax Media.

Despite the marriage lasting for forty years he told the Canberra court the relationship was over as soon as he discovered his wife’s disfigurement in 1975.

The couple were married in 1972 and both parties dispute when the marriage ended with the husband claiming it was in 1999 and the wife insisting it was in fact 2011.

Claiming he only stayed with his wife for the sake of his children the man accused his wife of avoiding sex to hide her disfigurement and insisted the person he lived with before his marriage was a ‘fake’ and an ‘illusion’.

"If I had seen them before I would not have married her.

"Our marriage was doomed. If she had not been pregnant I would have sought a divorce in 1975” he said.

Until 2006 the couple shared a bed and enjoyed social engagements and holidays together until 2011 when his wife told her mother-in-law that they had separated.

But the husband claims he was being a friend and the marriage had really ended years before but did admit they "occasionally" had sex between 1975 and 1999.

Presiding over the case, Judge Warwick Neville described the husband as ‘self absorbed’. The judge ruled that disfigurement was not legal grounds for divorce and found in favour of the wife’s claims that the marriage had ended in 2011 stating;

"[The husband had] a very cavalier, if not a misleading and remarkably nonchalant, bordering on an immaturely irresponsible, approach ... to the marital relationship with the wife which he cannot now claim to disavow, or to assert that it ended in 1999.

"There was a patent level of bitterness or resentfulness towards the wife that coloured his view of the world generally and his evidence in particular."

The couple were instructed to split their assets evenly.
