Opera stars perish on Germanwings airliner
Two famous opera singers were among 150 people killed when a Germanwings airliner crashed in the French Alps early today.
The Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona confirmed that Contralto Maria Radner, 33, accompanied by husband and baby, and Bass-baritone Oleg Bryjak, 54, were on the airliner.
They were flying to their home city of Dusseldorf in Germany after starring in Richard Wagner's opera Siegfried in Spain.
The Gran Teatre del Liceu lowered its flags and will observe a two-minute silence today, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.
Radner's baby was one of two infants to perish on the flight, according to officials.
Deutsche Oper am Rhein director Christoph Meyer said the company has lost a "great performer and a great person in Oleg Bryjak."
"We are stunned," he added.
A biography on Radner's management company's website says Radner made her debut in January 2012 at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and had performed all over the world since.
