There's been a tenfold leap in the number of drivers booked just over the limit in 40km/h zones across Victoria.

There's been a tenfold leap in the number of drivers booked just over the limit in 40km/h zones across Victoria.

Motorists have long suspected 40km/h zones were simply a revenue raising exercise and with almost 90,000 people booked going less than 10km/h over the limit in 40km/h zones in just six months you can certainly understand their frustration.

The speed zones are cash cows booking unsuspecting motorists in record numbers and are proving very lucrative indeed.

In 2013, more than 7000 motorists were nabbed driving less than 10km over the limit in 40km/h zones.

Between January and August last year, that number increased 10 fold, to a staggering 89,317 people.

In all, 128,000 Victorians were fined in 40km/h zones in just under eight months - sending a whopping $35.5 million in fines straight to the government

That's 100,000 more people than in 2013.

More motorists have been booked at Warrigal Rd, Chadstone than anywhere else.

This was followed by the camera at Flinders St and William St, then the camera at Exhibition St and Victoria St came, and Lakeside Drive in St Kilda.
