Protestors clash over plans to build a Mosque on the Sunshine Coast

Angry protestors have rallied against plans to build a mosque on the Sunshine Coast.

Hundreds of people gathered outside Stella Maris Catholic Church in Maroochydore on Saturday morning, opposite where the Mosque is flagged for construction.

They held placards and chanted anti-Islamic slogans.

One protestor, Susan Heuser, said she didn’t believe the Mosque would fit in.

"After what's been going on in Syria, the murder and slaughter of Christians and they're going to put a mosque opposite a Catholic Church. It's really bad taste," Ms Heuser said.

The leader of Australia’s One Nation Party, Jim Savage, was amoungst the protestors.

"It is purely a numbers game. Once they get the numbers here, then they will become a problem," he said.

But supporters also turned out to defend the development, labeling the protestors as racist and anti-democratic.

One student accused the protestors of being hypocritical.

"We're British settlers. There's no right to be patriotic to say other people can't come here,” she said.

Police were on hand to divide the protestors.
