Slippery pavers force speed limit cuts in Adelaide

Costly paved roadways in Adelaide’s CBD have backfired with speed limits halved on two popular strips because of safety concerns.

The Adelaide City Council has now halved speeds in Victoria Square after dropping the limit along an upgraded section of Hindley St.

The upgraded Victoria Square opened in January for the Tour Down Under at 50km/h, but following skid resistance tests, the city council today reduced the limit to 25km/h.

Neil Brown from the Adelaide City Council said it was: “Just to make sure the pedestrians and vehicles movements and cyclists are safe.”

It has also had to reduce the limit on a paved section of Hindley St from 50km/h to just 10km/h.

The RAA said such a low limit was a concern.

“25km/h is the normal speed limit for hazardous roadworks, so for the government to give approval for a 10km/h speed limit would indicate that it is quite dangerous,” Graeme O’Dea from the RAA said.

While the City Council said affected part of Hindley St is a UniSA project, the university sees it as a joint responsibility to find a solution.

The contractor on both projects, Fulton Hogan, declined to comment.
