Barack Obama threatened by potentially armed man

Police are responding to a threat against President Barack Obama in the US, according to reports.

Secret Service officials are working with local police in Connecticut ahead of a visit from President Obama in a bid to determine whether the his life is in danger, according to NBC News.

Nicole Mainor, a public affairs staff assistant for the Secret Service, issued the following statement:

“Information has been received by law enforcement regarding a potentially suspicious person and vehicle. We are working with our local law enforcement partners to determine the validity of the information provided.”

The suspect is believed to be male and could possibly be armed with a rifle.

The Hartford Courant reports that the suspect is believed to be driving a silver 2014 Volkswagen Jetta.

Obama arrived in Westchester Country Airport about 4am today AEST and is scheduled to make a number of appearances at fundraising events throughout the day.
