Denmark junior surfer shines

Promising young Denmark surfer Lachy Ross scored one of his best-ever results after finishing second to surfing star Jacob Willcox in the third and final round of the WA Junior Surfing Titles held in Geraldton last weekend.

Ross was superb across his heats and in the final of the under-18 junior boys division where he finished second narrowly to Willcox, who is touted as WA's next big surfing star.

Willcox won the final with a combined score of 15.347 points to edge out Ross on 13.07 points.

After winning round 1 in Margaret River, Willcox easily claimed the under-18 junior boys State title with 4000 points ahead of Kael Walsh (3060 points) in second and Ross (2940) in third.

The performance qualified Ross for the 2014 Australian Junior Surfing Titles which will be held in Yallingup in December.

Fellow Denmark surfer Emi Campbell showed her class in the under-18 junior girls' division by winning the last round on the weekend, also qualifying for the WA team for the upcoming national titles.

Campbell caught only three waves at the final, and was rewarded with a heat-high score of 7.07 from a possible 10 to hand her the round win.

She finished with a combined score of 10.74 points in the final to prevail over Mia McCarthy on 10.24 points, pushing her to second in the State title standings behind winner Bailee Hastie.

In the under-14 grommet girls' category, Albany's Sascha Roberts impressed on her way to finishing second in the final.

Roberts (10.67) could not topple Jamacia Selby (12.20) for the round win while fellow local competitor Pemba Spargo (9.70) was third in the final. In the overall State title standings Roberts placed third and Spargo came home in fifth place.

Albany's Lily Shepherd made the semifinals of the under-16 cadet girls division while Holly Minter and Clay Western also represented the Great Southern at the event.
